New Books!

The Clarke County School District approved money for each school to purchase materials to update media center collections.  The money focused on buying materials that met the new science and social studies curriculum.  These orders are starting to arrive in our media center, and we are so happy to see them here.  Here are pics of the first book order.  Also, I did a book talk on one of new arrivals.  Stop by and see what’s new.

Polldaddy

We are going to start putting some polls on our blog and on our media center webpage.  These polls are for students, teachers, families, and anyone else who visits our sites.  Here is our first poll.  Try it out!

Halloween

Awhile back, I posted about some great things that you can do in the month of October.  I also posted about how October is one of my favorite months.  One thing I want to do with this blog is share things from my life so that families and students can get to know things that I’m interested in.  My wife and I love to decorate for Halloween and Christmas.  This weekend, we made a short video of our Halloween decorations to share with our families who live in Blue Ridge and Clayton, GA as well as Albertville, AL.  I thought that I would also share it with you.  I know that some of you do not celebrate Halloween and may not wish to view this video, bu that is ok.  I also want to offer a warning that the music on this video might be too scary for some listeners!

September 11

Yesterday, some 4th and 5th grade classes came to the media center to hear stories that were connected with September 11th.  We read Fireboat by Maira Kalman and The Man Who Walked Between the Towers by Mordicai Gerstein.  We had some very powerful conversations about ways that we respond when tragedy strikes in our world.  Many students had questions, comments, and connections to the September 11th tragedy.  This could be a great opportunity to talk as a family about any stories you might have about responding to tragedy or memories of September 11th.

Mr. Plemmons reads Fireboat by Maira Calman. The story tells about a retired fireboat that sprang into action on September 11, 2001 to help firefighters pump water to the fires in NYC.

It’s a Panda Baby!

I’m writing this extra special post because I just watched Lun Lun, Zoo Atlanta’s Female Giant Panda, have her baby on the panda cam.  Many of the students already know how much I love pandas.  I followed Lun Lun’s first baby, Mei Lan, very closely with my third grade class 2 years ago.  I just happened to logon to Zoo Atlanta’s panda cam tonight as I was working on my other blog post and I was so lucky enough to see her have the baby live.  She is already being a great mother and protecting her new baby, which is just about the size of a stick of butter.  You can watch panda cam by visiting http://www.zooatlanta.org/animals_panda_cam.php4

First Week

We had a wonderful first full week in the media center.  The beginning of the week was extremely busy, and then checkout slowed down toward the end of the week.  I hope to see students continue to come checkout books individually as well as with their class.  I’ve attached a six minute podcast that talks about things we covered in orientation this week as well an introduction to our book dedication program, the Barrow Buddy Book Builders.  Have a great weekend!

Media Specialist Introduction: Episode 1

We’re Getting Ready

There are some changes coming to the Barrow Media Center, and the media specialist isn’t the only change.  There are many new things to see, including our storytellin’ swamp in front of the Smart Board.  I can’t wait for you to come in and check out what’s new.  I’ll be posting more in this blog as new things come about in our media center.  It’s going to be a great year at Barrow Elementary.
