Website Bookmarks

I have created a Delicious account for our media center.  If you aren’t familiar with Delicious, it’s a social bookmarking site on the internet.  I will place bookmarks to websites that we use in the media center on this page and tag the bookmarks with keywords.  You can go to the site and sort the bookmarks by their tags.  Right now, there are several election sites that we used in our election centers.  Students were very excited about these centers, so it would be great to follow-up and visit these websites again.  There are several  games that students enjoyed playing that teach about the election process and what it takes to become president.  Click here to visit our Delicious page.

Graphic Novels

Graphic novels are one of the hottest genres in children’s literature right now.  With their comic book format, they reel readers in and get them hooked on the joy of reading.  We are working on building a graphic novel collection in our media center.  You can also find comics online.  Here are some links that were recently published in School Library Journal.  Check them out and search for your own links to online graphic novels.

Reader’s Advisory

I’m always looking for great books to read.  I find my books in many different ways.  I browse the shelves at Barnes and Noble and Borders.  I read my latest copy of School Library Journal.  I also have some websites that feed into my Google Reader.  This week, I discovered a new way to learn about new books to read.  The Athens Regional Library has a reader’s advisory section.  You sign up by email, and the library emails you with news on a variety of book genres that you determine.  I signed up for the “kid’s books” email.  I receive an email that tells me about some suggested titles from the library and a link to that book in the library’s catalog.  I can place a hold right from my computer and have the book waiting for me at the library.  Don’t forget to support your local library and use its many wonderful services.  I keep learning more about what they offer each time I visit their website.

Regions of Georgia

Second grade has been coming all week to learn about the regions of Georgia.  There were six centers that students rotated through.  We had lots of help from the second grade teachers, student teachers, and substitute teachers.  On Friday, we did a Senteo quiz on the Smart Board.  I hope that the students had a great time and learned a lot.  Here are some photos.  Take a look.

Don’t forget your public library

The Athens Regional Library is such a wonderful resource in our community.  I wanted to point out some incredible services that they provide that you might not even be aware of.

Audio books are a great way to enjoy a book on the go.  Athens Regional Library provides access to downloadable audio books.  By visiting Georgia Download Destination, you can use your library card to download books to your computer, mp3 player, iPod, etc.  You can listen to books on the go or follow along in your own copy of the book.  Listening to audio books is a great way to build fluency because it provides a model reader for students to listen to.  This site has books for kids, but it also has lots of great books for adults.  The selection is limited, but there are some great titles available.

Another resource Athens Regional Library provides is Bookflix.  This link takes you to the Athens Regional Library homepage.  In the top center of the page, there is an orange box that lists several resources.  Bookflix is listed in this box.  Again, you need a library card to access this site.  This site is specific to children.  It pairs popular children’s books with a nonfiction book on the same topic.  For example, Bark, George by Jules Feiffer is paired with Pets at the Vet.  Students will see the book come to life with moving illustrations.  They will also see the text and have the option of hearing the text while following along or reading the text on their own.  I’m so excited to see this offered because it is an expensive resource to have at a school.  Thank you Athens Regional Library for being such a great resource to our community!
