A New Obama Book is Here
Many of you have been asking for a book on our new president, Barack Obama. A new book just arrived today, and more will be arriving soon. The book we received today is called Barack Obama Son of Promise, Child of Hope by Nikki Grimes and illustrated by Bryan Collier.
From the cover: “Ever since Barack Obama was young, Hope has lived inside him. From the beaches of Hawaii to the streets of Chicago, from the jungles of Indonesia to the plains of Kenya, he has held on to Hope. Even as a boy, Barack knew he wasn’t quite like anybody else, but through his journeys he found the ability to listen to Hope and become what he was meant to be: a bridge to bring people together. ”
Stop by the media center and check it out today.

Lots of New Books!
What do 367 new books look like? Check out these pics. We just finished processing these books that connect to the science and social studies curriculum for Georgia. When a shipment of books comes in, they don’t go straight onto the shelf. They have to be inspected, checked off on the invoice, stamped, and labeled. Because this order ties to our curriculum so well, I wanted teachers to get to see them before they went into circulation. Yesterday, we held a book preview and many teachers and students came to day to start checking out these books. We want to thank CCSD for funding these extra books during a tough economic time. They have helped us get a strong start toward having materials in our media center that match science and social studies curriculum for all grade levels.
Graphic Novels are Here!
It has been a long wait and an interesting story about all of the trouble it took to get our new graphic novels to our media center. I won’t tell you the story now, but I wanted to let you know that…..THEY’RE HERE! Several students already came to check them out today. Check out the pics below to see the new arrivals and some very excited students.
It’s Fall! Come check out a Fall Story!
We have lots of Fall books in our media center. Some are scary or funny Halloween stories, but others just celebrate this great, colorful season. Here’s a book talk about one of our newest books in the media center. It’s waiting to get in the hands of someone who loves to read with a partner.
Second Day Breaks Record
Well…I just thought we checked out a lot of books yesterday. Today, six more classes and a few other students visited the media center and checked out 286 books. For those of you wanting to do a math problem: We checked out 222 books yesterday. Today we checked out 286 books. How many more books did we check out today than yesterday?
I have really enjoyed chatting with students about books. I can tell that this is going to be such a wonderful job. I love hearing about the students’ interests. We’re already finding areas where we need to build up our collection based on student interest. We’re taking notes and we’ll try to buy some new books throughout the year. Also, many books were returned to the media center today because students had already finished them! Many of our new books are getting rave reviews from students. I enjoyed hearing what students thought about the books that they returned. We’re off to a great start. Keep checking out those books.
New Books
What an exciting day! I watched out the window for the UPS truck to arrive every time I walked past a window. Our first shipment of books was due to arrive at Barrow today and I couldn’t wait to rip open the boxes and see what was inside. At about 3:00PM, they finally arrived. I couldn’t get the boxes open fast enough. The books were all tightly wrapped in plastic so I sliced through it with scissors and spread the books all out on the counter to see. I wanted to read them all right then, but unfortunately I had other things to tend to, like our new BTV system.
Tomorrow, I will be getting the new books ready for display and checkout and trying not to sit down and read them all right away. You should be able to see them at Taste of Barrow if all goes well. In our new card catalog, there is a section called “Resource Lists”. I created a list that shows all 75 books that just arrived in our media center. I can’t wait to meet everyone tomorrow night and begin sharing my love of reading with you all.
Exciting things are coming!
I just received confirmation that our first shipment of new books for the media center is on its way. These books should be here in time for A Taste of Barrow. They include many of the GA Book Award nominees and many positively, reviewed titles. I can’t wait for you to see them. You won’t be able to check them out yet, but you will get to see the 75 new books that we have in the media center. We will get many more new books this year. We plan on ordering a lot of new science and social studies books. Don’t forget to visit our website and consider joining the Barrow Buddy Book Builders by donating $20 to dedicate a book in honor or in memory of someone or something. This will help us get even more books in our media center! Don’t forget to stop by and say hello on August 6 at 5:30 PM at A Taste of Barrow.
